Redeveloped Basin Reserve Cottage opening

A tribute to Wes Armstrong - Groundsman Basin Reserve (1969 -1994)

Wes Armstrong took up the position of groundsman at the Basin Reserve in 1969 and prepared pitches on 19 occasions for test cricket with a record of 6 wins and 12 draws including  New Zealand's first ever Test match victory over England at the Basin Reserve. Wes recalled the moment during this game Geoffrey Boycott got a good stern talking too from the very affable Mr Armstrong.

After a 25 year innings,  dedicated to preparing quality surfaces at the Basin Reserve,  Wes parked up the roller for the last time.

The groundsman cottage which is classified a heritage building, has recently been renovated and repositioned overlooking the Basin Reserve. It has been duly named the Wes Armstrong Cottage.

Wes and his extended family returned to his ritual home, for the official opening of the cottage in his honour by Wellington Mayor Celia Wade - Brown. Don Neely  recalled the historic context of the cottage and shared memorable moments of Wes and his stella career as its custodian.

This was a great occasion for the Armstrong family, who dedicated a huge part of their life to the Basin Reserve – the  legacy of Wes will forever be captured in a time capsule engrained within the cottage.

Congratulations to the Basin Reserve Trust and Cricket Wellington on the initiative and the completion of the first upgrade project of the Basin Reserve upgrade master plan
